The Absence of Death

“I feel like my childhood is gone.” I told my husband as we prepared for the funeral of my last uncle, the third to exit this life in the last eight months. This has been hard grief. These men who were a part of my life for as long as I can remember are now gone. My heart hurts and a lot of tears have been shed.

The good news is that all of them knew Jesus as Savior and I know that they are with Him, living a life I can only imagine.

In Revelation 21, God showed John the new heaven and new earth that is to come, the place where God lives among His people. It is there that the Almighty will tenderly wipe away all the tears we’ve cried.

It is there that death is no more, sorrow is gone,
grief is done, and pain is utterly eliminated.

No more death.
No more sorrow.
No more grief.
No more pain.
No need for tears.

All these—death, sorrow, grief, pain, tears—are inevitable in this human life as we know it. From the first time our parents break our hearts by saying no to us to the final breath of the one we’ve loved dearly, sorrow and grief are a part of life. Tears are natural.

However, in that day, that glorious day, when all is set right, when God lives among His people, the hands that carved out oceans will wipe those tears of sorrow and anguish from our eyes. The voice that spoke light into existence will comfort us and welcome us to this place where all that seemed so natural is gone forever. Forever.

This is an assurance we have from the Father as a believer, as one who has made Jesus the Lord of their lives, receiving His rescue from the consequences of sin. This is a truth about what we have to look forward to.

Now we face the absence of those we love,
but in that day we will enjoy the absence of death, and it will never return.

Man! I’m looking forward to that day.

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
