Will you sacrifice your life?

When we read this verse, these words said by Jesus, we naturally think of His crucifixion. But what about His life?

When we read the fullness of the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, we see that He sacrificed His life for a number of years as He shepherded His followers into a real and lasting relationship with the Father.

He left his home and family.
He walked miles and miles, never having a specific place to lay His head at night.
He endured taunts and barbs of old neighbors and strangers who had never met Him.
He listened to the childish mutterings of His flock.

He gave His life for them as He lived.

We can do that, too, you know.

We are each given a flock – spouse, children, friends, coworkers, ministries, classes – some group that we have influence with.

We can sacrifice our lives for them when we do those little things like giving up our favorite TV show in order to do what they want. Maybe we cook dinner on our birthday instead of going out to eat. Sometimes we go above and beyond in our work area so others don’t have to do as much.

Anytime we give up some of us, our time, our “rights,” we’re sacrificing for others.
It’s possible we do that without thinking, and if so, that’s wonderful!

Some of us, though, need to consider how we can serve others, how we can sacrifice for others and serve them like never before.

And when they ask what’s going on, we can share that we’re following in the footsteps of the Savior and let the conversation about Him go on.

Who knows? We might be growing the Kingdom when we do.
