Serving > being served. Jesus said so.

Jesus is God. He deserved the best of everything. Adoration, respect, a seat at the head of every table, a throne. He deserved this, and He knew He deserved it, yet He chose to come in the disguise of a tradesman, a man who worked with His hands. He accepted the seat at the other end of the table. He served so many… touching wounds, looking into hurting eyes, lifting chins, speaking truth, healing hearts and bodies.

As He served His disciples the Passover meal, He was preparing them for how they should carry on. They knew — the best they could at that time — that He was God, the Messiah, come to rescue them according to scripture. They knew He was deserving of the highest, the utmost, the best. They had walked with him for three years, watching how He served their fellow people, touching the untouchable, challenging religious beliefs of the day, and drawing people into relationship.

Here Jesus was reminding them that He, the Son of Man, though deserving of all honor, glory, and praise, didn’t come to earth so that those on earth could serve Him, He came so that He could serve those on earth. And He instructed them that this would be their way from then on.

Well, yeah, but I can’t go on a walkabout for three years, I can’t heal, and I’m not the best encourager. How am I supposed to serve others like Jesus did?

Jesus met people wherever He was as He was going about His day.

You can do that. You can see people. Really see them. Meet the one across the counter’s eyes. Smile. Thank them. Mean it. You can serve where you live. Literally, in the home in which you live. Encourage your spouse. Cheer your children. Pray with them. Speak Truth to them (John 14:6). Bind their wounds. Offer them value. Look them in the eyes and show them your love for them.

Let’s start today and make this an ongoing project. Let’s be more like Jesus: serving more than served.

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
