Separation

Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. In the sky, on the ground, nothing.

Nothing will ever separate is from the LOVE of GOD. Talk about blessed assurance!

Sometimes we misconstrue these words, though. We’re so human, aren’t we?

Sometimes we leave out “the love of” and say that nothing separates us from God.

That sounds nice and all, but God said through the prophet Isaiah that our sins cut us off from God, and that because of them, He has turned away and won’t listen (Is 59:2). Jeremiah 6:8 speaks of God being alienated from His people because of their sin. Ezekiel 14:5,7 talks of God’s people who have set up idols in their hearts, choosing to separate themselves from Him.

I don’t believe those truths have changed. After all, we tell unbelievers that their greatest need is reconciliation with God, that the cross bridges the gap caused by sin that exists between us and God. That doesn’t change once we have accepted Jesus’ sacrifice. The gap is bridged, for sure, but when we hold onto sin, treasuring it more than the presence of the Almighty, we have chosen to move away from God, to take apart the bridge.

The bottom line is that God’s position never moves. He is always perfect, holy and eternal. It is us, His creation, that keeps finding ways to please self more than God. That creates a separation from Him — NOT His love. His love is as perfect and holy and eternal as He is. Even when He is turned away from us because of our sin, His love for us is alive and well. He doesn’t write us off as hopeless, no matter how how many times we stray and return. Blessed assurance.

Oh, that we would understand that love and choose to never hurt our heavenly Parent again!

The choice is ours, y’all. Do we choose God over everything and everyone or do we choose self and how we feel over Him?

Today is a good day to make this choice and determine to stand on that choice every subsequent day.
