Never give up? Why not?

The phrase is spoken in every sports locker room. It’s seen on all kinds of motivational posters.

NEVER GIVE UP!

The thing is, with a phrase like that, we need a why-not. Sports teams say it so the team will come together and win, so the why-not is “because as a team we will win.”

To me, though, saying the phrase as motivation requires a why-not. What’s the point of never giving up when I’m tired, broken, or desperate? Why NOT give up?

The Apostle Paul reminds us that even though our physical body is tired and growing weaker day by day, our spirit is growing stronger, and it is our spirit that will live on forever.

Think about that. The part of us that will die off does get weaker and more frail until, eventually, it’s done. Yet WE live on. The part of us that knows right from wrong, good from evil, truth from lie will live forever.

The part of us that recognizes God will never die.

It is that part that we should protect and nurture. We should feed it liberally and protect it fiercely. We should never give up, never become utterly spiritless, exhausted or wearied from fear. Why not? Because even though our bodies aren’t what they used to be, our spirits are better than ever!

Today, let’s choose to keep feeding our spirit the truth of God and His ways. Let’s choose to never give up, despite the turmoil, chaos, and evil that seems to reign in our world.
