Guard, protect, and guide your heart!

Guard your heart? What’s that mean?

We’re not talking about the organ that pumps blood throughout your body. We’re talking about the deep thoughts, the seat of all action, the belief system.

It is so easy to take in information – and we’re doing so at an alarming rate right now – and shift our belief system completely based on this new “evidence.” We turn this way and that as though we have no real foundation.

To guard your heart is to protect it, to keep it from harmful things happening to it. It’s to block out the things that could lead it astray. It’s to keep distractions from taking it off track.

Scripture tells us that as we think, so we are. If we allow our deep-seated thoughts to move outside the Truth of God, we are setting ourselves up for disaster. When we do that, we’ve taken our eyes off God and chosen to let self or ‘that’ thought leader be our guide in place of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah was told by God not to think as others did, not to see a conspiracy everywhere he turned, and not to live in dread of what frightens. So appropriate for today; don’t you think?

Guarding your heart requires that you be intentional about what you let into your deepest self, but especially what you let stay there. What you think upon, ruminate over, is what then comes forth in your behavior.

This is what Paul addressed when he said to take all thoughts captive. We simply must slow down and recognize what we’re thinking. Images and ideas come at us lightning fast every moment, but we have the capability of stopping the influx to examine each thought and determine if it can stay or if it must go. It’s high time we started doing that.

Today, we stand at the trailhead of right thinking. Do we choose to start walking or do we get back in the car and head home to keep doing what we’ve always done? Choose to protect your heart above all else to please God above all else and walk in right behavior above all else.
