I can’t remember the first time I heard someone say “God is good” then someone respond “all the time!” Then the first person would repeat that “All the time” and the other would respond, “God is good!”
This morning, someone on social media shared a beautiful picture of a sunrise with the words, “God is good!” My comment was… you guessed it, “…all the time!”
As I hit send, my heart was overwhelmed with a truth from our Lord. Let’s see if I can convey it well:
We humans are fickle. Yes we are. We’re no better than those children of Israel who time after time strayed from the God who loved them and rescued them from slavery and death. We experience Him do something amazing for us and we say, “God is good!”
Then life happens, someone cuts us off in traffic, death visits, someone lies, it rains, our car breaks down, whatever, our prayers aren’t answered, and we don’t say “God is good!” We either don’t say anything at all or we say He’s punishing us or that He’s forgotten us.
God reminded me today to remind you today that He IS good ALL THE TIME, whether we think He is or not. The TRUTH is, when your car broke down in the middle of downtown traffic at 5 pm on a Friday, He was good. That time when your baby was so sick and you were so scared, He was good. That time when it rained for days and all your plans went out the window, He was good.
And here’s a tough one: when He didn’t answer that prayer? He DID answer it. His answer was “No.” And He was STILL good.
When I say we’re fickle beings, I mean that even as adults, some of us more mature than others, we still want what we want when we want it and when we don’t get it, we believe the world has fallen apart and that God doesn’t care.
C’mon now. You know those tantrums. Not necessarily kicking and screaming. Sometimes, they’re arms folded with the mindset that you’ll never have anything to do with that one again. Uh-huh. Thought you’d recognize that.
We have to move off our own pedestals. We have to step down and step back and stop believing that the world revolves around us and our wants. We have to remember that God is God and we are not. He knows everything from before there was light until this old earth is no more and He knows it all right now. His plan is His and has a place in it for us, but we must surrender to His will in it.
The good news is that He really is good all the time. He really does love us all the time. He really does work all things for our good all the time. He never changes. Never.
Next time that person cuts you off in traffic, speak it, “God is good all the time! All the time, God is good!”
When death visits, whisper it through your heartache.
When your car breaks down, when your prayers aren’t answered, say the words again and let your heart believe them.
These two photos are taken from the same place. In one, the blinds are closed and all you see is the filtered light from outside. In the other, they are opened and you see the amazing view.
When the blinds are closed in our lives, when we’re not seeing God as we wish, doing what we want, we have to remember that He is still God and pull back the blinds to see Him as He is.
Pull back the blinds today and see that God is good all the time. All the time, God is good.
