If 2020 taught us anything… how many times have you heard that phrase? It’s been used and overused, yet here I am, using it.
If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that change is not only inevitable, sometimes it’s sudden or thrust upon us. No business owner went into 2020 thinking they would love to shut down their business and go broke. No healthcare worker went into 2020 hoping for 20-hour days serving in hazmat gear. No parent went into 2020 figuring out how to transition their child from going to school each day to staying home to school each day without their friends nearby.
Change happens. We tend to say it happens when we least expect it, but we know it comes along, so why isn’t it expected? I have no answer for that, sorry.
One thing we can know is that even in the business challenges of a pandemic, Jesus is the same strong leader as He was when He walked the earth.
Even in healthcare crises, Jesus is the same tender, compassionate, kind healer He has always been.
Even in the home of the unprepared home school, Jesus is the same loving teacher as ever.
Regardless our circumstances, Jesus is the same as He was when talking to Peter, James, John, and His other followers. He still loves deeply and cares wholeheartedly. He still calls us out of complacency and religion to something more. He still commands us to love. He still guides us to godly living. He still heals. He still forgives. He still….
What that means to us is that in the ongoing uncertainty that is life on earth, we have a place to go that is the same every single time. Every time we turn to Him, He is the same loving Savior as He was the first time we came to Him.
With His love and compassion also comes His holiness. We must never forget that His holiness never changes either. He still doesn’t tolerate sin. He loves that one embroiled in it, but He leads them to life through Him and away from the self-god they are comfortable with.
He loves us where we are, but He will not leave us in that state of separation from Him. What Jesus considered wrong in the beginning, He considers wrong now, and every wrong we do separates us from Him and is deserving of death. Right and wrong don’t change with the times or the culture, and “new revelation” doesn’t make either the other.
If you know Jesus as your Savior, you can rest in this truth that the rules don’t change with the culture, the times, the politicians, or anything else. What was in the beginning is the same today and will be tomorrow.
Jesus never changes to suit us. We change to suit Him, and there’s a peace in that, if we choose to see it.
