Are you running to the right place for help?

What do you do when you need help? Real help. The kind you need when all of life seems to be crushing you into oblivion.

Do you turn to friends for advice? Maybe buy or borrow a new book? How about posting the issue on social media to get a consensus about your next step?

In the psalmist’s day, safety (help) was found in the mountains. Running to them was as good as running to a fortress.

Except…

Running to them wasn’t nearly as good as running to the Lord.

Same for us today. Turning to a friend, a book, or social media isn’t nearly as safe or helpful as running to the Lord.

But, Faye, I can’t SEE the Lord. I can see my friends and the book and the replies on social media. I feel like I get real help from them.

Do you, though? Let’s define real help. There’s a vast difference between sympathy and the kind of help the Lord gives. Even if a thousand reply to your Facebook or Instagram post with tears, prayers, or advice, none of them will give you the peace that God offers. Not one.

Turning pages filled with a person’s wisdom has nothing on the wisdom of God available on our request. That wisdom is so necessary in knowing our next step.

Maybe you’re not just in a pickle today, but drowning in the whole barrel, and you are so tired and utterly scared. Maybe you’re over all the battle. Allow me to give you this advice: turn to the One who made those mountains of friends, books, and social media that you want to run to for safety. Recognize that Almighty God really is bigger than than the Boogie Man and all our troubles. He is the tried and true Peace-giver, Problem-solver, Teacher, and Lover of our very souls. When we allow Him that place of ultimate royalty in our lives, we have help. Perfect help. Even when we can’t see.

Let’s make that declaration and determination today: MY help comes from the Lord.

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
