What grave are you lying in, and how do you rise up?

I love the song, Ain’t No Grave as done by Molly Skaggs and the Bethel worship team. As I listened to it this morning, I heard God speaking to my spirit and I must share it with you.

You can listen to it here.

When we listen to this song, we think about the grave as the hole in the ground our soulless body is lowered into.

Yet, the words talk about shame and fear holding us just as the grave does.

God reminded me of my past, how I let anger at betrayal hold me captive. How I let shame of the choices of others keep me buried, and how I let fear of rejection, imperfection, and failure hold me back.

See, God called me to a mission long ago and I remained frozen, lost in the grave of shame, anger, and fear.

I am so grateful that He didn’t leave me there, wasting away and decaying. He was that trumpet sound, calling me up from that horrible, cruel grave. He called me forth, as He did Lazarus, to life abundant and free!

My friend, what grave are you buried in? Don’t receive shame for being there. That’s not God. That’s the enemy who wants to keep you from living in the purpose for which God made you.

Is it fear? Are you a perfectionist who rarely starts because you’re not sure you can finish perfectly?
Is it shame? Is there something that you’ve done or was done to you that you hide from, certain that you’ll be hurt again or ostracized if anyone knows?
Is it anger? Are you still bitter about what that person did or said such that your thoughts always return to that instead of moving forward?

Oh, Believer! There is hope! There is resurrection! Jesus died so you could be free from these! Turn all those things over to Him. Drop them there at the foot of the cross, then leave them there. Do NOT pick the corner back up and try to slide off with it. Drop it. Leave it.

You’ll feel weird for a while, not bearing that load, seeing light instead of only darkness, being able to breathe instead of the crushing weight of shame, anger, fear, or other grave-like burden, BUT, you’ll soon get used to the LIFE that is yours in Christ!
