This verse sometimes feels like pressure to divest oneself of all savings and material goods; doesn’t it?

I get that. I think that when we receive it that way, we’re missing Jesus’ bigger point.

While we will live forever, some of the things we invest time and resources in will not. That doesn’t mean those things are bad.

It means we must become intentional about where we invest. It’s all a heart issue.

If we have a huge beautiful home and remain secluded in it away from all, our hearts could be making that home our god instead of the Almighty. We should find ways to use it to serve others.

Any tangible item we have the privilege to steward, we should be using to glorify and bring others to God.

What about family? That’s a treasure too, right?

Sure is. Even more so than the house, car, boat, and vacations. Your family is eternal, your things are not. Now, if we can use the tangible, material things to serve and bless the people in our lives, so much the better!

I believe Jesus was challenging His followers, including us, to look beyond today’s comfort and desires. Look past what I want right here, right now to the time when we leave this life and enter the rest of eternity. If we do that, our possessions may not change, but our hearts likely will, and that pleases the Lord.

Do you need a heart-shift today?
First, recognize that all the things belong to the Lord and He allows you to use them and take care of them.
Next, examine how you think about and use those things. Where do they rank in your life? Would you give them up for family or if God said to?
Finally, take action. If you have things ahead of family, make the change. Remember the eternal outranks the temporary every time. Spend time on those around you who need to know Jesus.

Use your things and love your people.
