Tasting the Lord seems strange and impossible, doesn’t it? Maybe we need to look to Webster to help straighten that out.

One of the definitions of TASTE is: to perceive or recognize as if by the sense of taste.

What happens when we taste something? We examine that something with our most sensitive parts. We discern not only the flavor, but the texture, size and more. We determine if that something is worth our time and effort in seconds.

I believe the psalmist is telling us to not take someone else’s word for the goodness of the Lord, but to get up close and check Him out. Examine Him. In so doing, the ‘taster’ will understand just how good He really is.

The psalmist goes on to say that those who take refuge in the Lord have great joy. Huh?

Back to Webster! A refuge is a shelter or protection from danger or distress, a place that provides shelter or protection, something to which one has recourse in difficulty.

A shelter from danger or distress. A place of protection. The immutable, unchangeable God is our refuge. When we run to Him we find shelter, we are protected, we have recourse when difficulties surround us. And in that refuge, we find joy!

How is that? Because when we are not scared and shaking in our boots, we are not distracted by what is scaring us. We can actually rest. We can see clearly what IS instead of what MIGHT BE. We joy in moments that we would have missed.

Dear one, is your heart troubled, frightened, lonely, broken? Go to your Refuge for protection and rest. Don’t go slowly, race to Him! Stay there. Feel the peace. Feel the ugliness that is attacking your heart and mind fall from you. Experience the peace and embrace the joy. Today is the perfect day to start.
