Sing! You know you want to.

Psalms 98:1-2:
Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! The Lord has announced his victory and has revealed his righteousness to every nation!

Sing out people of God! Use new words to express your gratitude and praise of the One who rescues.

Why would the psalmist say to sing a new song when there were so many songs telling of God’s marvelous deeds and amazing victories?

Could it be because the people began singing them with their lips while their minds were elsewhere?

Have you ever been singing in church while adding to your mental task list? Yeah, me too.

Now, this doesn’t mean we have to learn all new songs, but it means we might need to update the melody of our heart. We could need a trip to the oasis of refreshing where we pick up the Word and read of the magnificence of the Lord with newly opened hearts and refreshed minds.

Maybe it’s just our vocabulary we need to update. Read through Psalms. The writers used many different words for their praise, some we rarely use today.

We want to be very careful that we don’t state our praises to Almighty God by rote. We never want it to be a recital of the usual, but the most heartfelt emotion and action of our day.

Today, let’s think of new “songs.” Let’s recall the marvelous things God has done, both in the Bible and in our lives. When we realize just how incredible He has been for us, our praises will come from a heart that is overflowing with praise for its Creator.
