Inviting the cut

A two-edged sword cuts whichever way it’s moved. Some are so razor sharp that the merest movement issues a deep cut.

This is what the Word of God is for us. Yes, I said FOR. See, when we were lost and floundering, living against God, we needed to understand that and the Sword removed the excuses and denials we gave.

As believers, we need the same Sword, slicing away the complacency and reticence to reveal the truth about our choices and our options.

This Sword hurts when it moves, when it tears apart old beliefs and wrecks overused excuses. It angers us when it reveals sin we thought so hidden we no longer see it as sin.

BUT, this Sword is for us, because the revelation of sin allows us to agree with God about it and turn away from it. The tearing down of false beliefs moves us into corrected understanding of who God is and who we are in Him. That alone heals our minds and hearts. We need that.

We need it to wreck our excuses, too. We love to wave away the things we should be doing or not doing according to scripture because of whatever excuse we throw out. The thing is, when we do that, we are allowing old thinking, the old fleshly human, to control our actions instead of the Spirit. We miss out on so much and the people we are called to reach do, too.

Maybe this is why so many of us good Christian folk don’t pick up our Bibles and read? Maybe it’s easier to read a devotion and let that qualify as scripture reading?

Maybe it’s time to be brave enough to ask the Lord to use that sword to trim away what doesn’t belong in us then dive into the Book, day in and day out, laying ourselves open to the power of Almighty God to remove what doesn’t belong and instill what does.

Whew! This is hard stuff, y’all. None of us like being cut apart, but sometimes it’s what we need.

Today’s challenge: read this whole chapter of Hebrews. Before you start, ask God to show you what He wants you to get from it. When He does, make whatever course corrections you need in order to be in complete alignment with Him.

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
