Immutable

An attribute is a quality or characteristic for which a person is known. We're going to explore several attributes of God over the next few weeks. I'm glad you're joining us!

What on earth does immutable mean, Faye? Yeah, I had that reaction, too. Thanks to my fifth grade English teacher, I quickly ran to the dictionary to find out.

In a nutshell, immutable means unchanging. It is defined as, “Not subject or susceptible to change. Not capable of change. Unchangeable, unalterable. Unable to be changed without exception.”

So, when we say that God is immutable, we are declaring that He does not, will not, cannot change. You know how we tend to change our minds and behaviors based on the culture in which we live? God isn’t like that. Nothing sways Him. Nothing tempts Him to change. Nothing moves Him from what He said millennia ago.

Nothing. No one.

God spoke to Israel through the prophet Malachi, saying, “I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.” His covenant words to Abraham were as sure at that moment as they were when He spoke them to Abraham.

Because God is immutable, we can trust Him in all circumstances. Unlike an employer or teacher who seems to switch up values every day, leaving us wondering what’s coming next, God remains the same. His edicts remain the same. What He said yesterday means the same thing He says today, and by the way, it’s the same as He said to Moses, David, and Isaiah.

Did you notice in the definition that immutable means “not capable of change”? Not only is God not tempted to change, He is not capable of changing. He’s not going to be different today than He was yesterday. He’s always going to remain the same.

Oh, Believer! What joy to serve the immutable God! To know that He won’t be changing His mind or His ways, to know that He won’t say do this today then call it wrong tomorrow is great comfort.

Let’s trust and worship the unchanging God today!

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
