Finding Your Purpose: Questions to Ask Yourself

You likely understand that knowing your purpose is a big deal, but do you know how to find your purpose? If you posed that question to several people, the majority would likely answer no. That’s because there is a whole world of possibilities. People are afraid to try something new for fear of the unknown. They often don’t know how to go about looking for what they should be doing — they don’t even know where to start.

As a believer in Jesus, He is always the starting place. You were designed and created with a unique purpose. Foremost, you were created to glorify Him and to build His kingdom. The purpose you’re looking for is how He intends for you to do those two things.

Let me ask: Is what you are doing now satisfying? Not thinking about the bills and your paycheck for a moment. Do you get charged up getting up every morning to go to work? How do you feel on the evenings before you return to work after a day off? Do you dread having to get up in the morning, or does it excite you?

It is possible you may feel stuck doing something in which you don’t believe. Maybe you work for a company that isn’t doing right by the community. What they are doing may be legal, but you don’t feel it’s ethical. The job pays well, though, so you stick with it. You might even like many of the people who work there. However, the company sells something that makes your stomach turn. You must ask yourself if you can continue to work in an environment which doesn’t fit well with your core beliefs.

In that contemplation, you will also need to ask yourself what will it take to make changes to get out of your current situation and into something you truly enjoy. It may require going back to school or at least, training online. Fortunately, there are several options available, and many of them are cheap or free.

You can see a path laid out well, so ask yourself if you’re passionate enough to put in the time and effort to follow that path to the life you want? If not, you haven’t found your purpose. You should continue where you are, doing what you’re doing, or find another path. Keep repeating this process until you find the path you’re passionate enough to follow and put forth the effort.

Explore your current situation and determine if you can change up your routine. For instance, ask your workplace if there are other opportunities within the organization that you can explore. If there are, they may ask you to serve two roles (your old position and your new one) while transitioning. Working like this could require putting in overtime, etc. But, it gives you some options to explore your purpose.

Keep going until you find that passion that God designed in you that will give Him glory and build His kingdom. Then, live forward in that passion like there’s no tomorrow!

You are worth it!
