“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”
I don’t know about you, but every time I read these words, I want to either shout hallelujah or collapse in a quivering heap.
These words were written at the time when Israel was under siege by Babylon. The times were beyond horrible. No food. Not what most of us have seen, the nothing in the pantry we WANT, this was literally no food within the city. People were eating rats, mice, dogs, and each other to survive. Imagine how hungry you have to be to consider that, much less do it.
This wasn’t just an invasion. This was punishment for a consistent, continuously heinous act: rejecting God.
The people continuously chose to live against God through the choice to sin. They rejected Him and His laws. He had made a covenant with them, offering them life abundant and they chose to break it. Not just one or two, the vast majority of them. This siege was the consequence.
And yet….
God’s love for His people never slacked, never waned, never lowered. It was because of His love that He allowed this consequence. Yes, physical lives were lost, but His desire was for their spiritual lives to be saved.
This is us today when we choose anything other than God as the anchor of our life. We must be careful that when we say we choose Him as anchor, we don’t then choose something else as sail or rudder. It is either all God or none of God. There is no in-between.
Even in the siege upon our lives, we can know that God’s love remains the same and He offers us that hand up from the pit every day, not with leftover mercies that might seem lacking, but new mercies that lift us high and put us out of the reach of the enemy.
Let’s skip the siege, Believers. Let’s choose God completely. Let Him have control of mind, body, soul, spirit, and every circumstance. Whether it’s phone call, diagnosis, or breakfast choice, seek Him above all and follow Him in complete surrender. Complete surrender.
His love never fails. His mercies are new every day.
