Do NOT just follow your heart!

How many times have you heard the advice, “Just follow your heart!”?
How many times have you said it?

Yeah, me too.

The truth is, though, that’s not good advice at all. God, through Jeremiah, tells us in no uncertain terms that the heart/mind lies to us. It couches the ungodly in pretty clothing, enticing us to follow it instead of the Almighty.

Even as a believer, our heart is deceitful, but there is a cure. The regular (read: moment-by-moment) application of the scripture and Holy Spirit will reveal truth to us and prevent us following our deceitful hearts into ungodly territory.

“It’s not really a lie, I’m just saying that to keep from hurting his feelings” can become encouragement that leads that one into deeper pain and trauma. (Have you watched American Idol? Some of those folks needed someone telling them truth before they got in front of those judges.)

“It’s just a paperclip and a notepad. My employer isn’t going to miss it” which, when done by several, increases the costs to the business and can lead to fewer pay increases or even job cutbacks, hurting you and others.

“What? It’s not like it’s secret! Everyone knows what she’s been doing” is gossip, any way you look at it, and God frowns on it. But we simply need to be sure that this person knows so they don’t fall into that trap! No. Just say no.

See? Your heart is deceitful. It walks you right up to and through the door of sin and the only one who can stop that is you. You must choose to follow your heart or follow the Holy Spirit.

Let’s choose well today.
