Building a Legacy You Want to Leave Behind

What do you want your life to say? What’s the message you live every day to get out there? What will be remembered most when you’re gone?

Is it that you enjoyed a childhood of joy, laughter, and fun?
Maybe it’s a childhood of disaster, abuse, and neglect?
Could it be that you can barely survive the things that have happened to you?
Might it include the good, bad, ugly, along with the beautiful healing only God can bring?

Believer, you have the same wherewithal that Paul had when he wrote these words to the believers at Philippi. You have the same Spirit living in you that He did. He suffered in life. He enjoyed life. He was tortured. His life was not all sunshine and roses. Yet his expressed desire was that his life would bring honor to Christ whether he lived or died.

I know about the childhood that had lots of fun in it, but also lots of things that weren’t good, dressed up to seem normal. I know what abuse—emotional and physical—feels like. I know what it’s like to hear an ugly diagnosis, three times over.

What we do with those things becomes our legacy—what we pass on while living and after death.

As we mature in our faith, we will arrive at the place Paul was. We will care less about taking our next breath than we do about the impact on others for Christ that breath will have.

What do you want your life to say? What’s the message you live every day to get out there? What will be remembered most when you’re gone? Time to get to work on that. Today’s the best day to start!
