Who is He then, this “King of Glory,” David the psalmist asks in his praise, before answering the question.
The Lord of Heaven’s armies is the King of Glory – ruling over all of creation with His heavenly armies.
We who are finite humans – and that’s actually all of us – can’t quite comprehend the complete rule God has over all creation – not just earth and her people, but heaven, too. And all the planets and galaxies and stars, along with everything unexplored, undiscovered, and unmentioned.
He RULES over all, not just knows it’s there, and He’s backed up by a ginormous army of the heavenly host. That’s angels, y’all. Not the cute cherubs floating around on clouds. That’s brilliant, mighty warrior angels, prepared for battle with the worst enemy created. They’ve done battle with the ancient enemy for eons, taking wounds and giving them.
Almighty God is the Commander-in-Chief of all the heavenly army. He is the one who gives them orders even as He keeps all the universe in order. HE is the King of Glory.
And just as we get our minds wrapped around that truth, we recall that this Mighty God looks down on us, His created ones, sinful and wayward, and offers us the Way to Him, providing the sacrifice that is required in order for us to be with Him… Himself. His mercy and grace know no bounds.
THIS is the King of Glory, and we’re to pause and think about that. Think about how amazing He is, the hatred He has for sin, the sin-separation that keeps us from His presence, the grace He gives as He redeems us, the warriors He sends to protect us, and realize that God the Creator, Provider, Sustainer loves you, sees you, sings over you, and holds you in His hand.
Yeah, think about that.
