David wrote, and most likely sang, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

We look at that hiding as memorization, and I think that’s a fabulous thing. There are verses in my memory that I memorized as a child that remain with me. Being able to recite them now is a comfort and a guide.

Kinda sounds like the Holy Spirit uses what I’ve stored away to comfort and guide. Hmmm.

While I fully believe that storing the Word in our memory banks is crucial and most excellent, my understanding is that we must believe and apply that Word in our every day, walking-around lives. That application secures God’s words within us.

I believe that is where the not sinning against God comes in.

When we know the words, we know a rule. We know what our Heavenly Father says about the action we’re about to take.

We can ignore words.

Instead, when we apply those words and build our character on them, allowing the Holy Spirit to develop us, it’s much harder to ignore, because then, we would be denying who we are.

Much more difficult.

We can start today. Memorize this verse and apply it. Actually make the plan that as you store up His Word in you, you’re going to mold your character according to them so that you will not sin.

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
