When we think of leaders in our day and time, we think of people way “up there,” high above us, making scads more money, inaccessible, and never get their hands dirty.

Sadly, some church leaders have become the same.

This is NOT the model Jesus set forth. Jesus expects everyone He puts in a leadership role to be a servant of the people he or she leads. He demonstrated this by getting on His knees and performing the lowest servant’s task of washing feet.

He was there, walking all over Judah and Israel, leading these guys, teaching them, chastising them, giving them challenges and assignments – and they chose to follow Him.

Then that night at supper, He took the basin and the towel and washed their feet – a task given to the lowest servant on staff. He made Himself low to serve His followers.

This is real leadership. Not how many spotlights are shone on us or how many followers, likes, and shares we have. It’s not how high the stage or staying in the green room until it’s time to speak.

It’s how many lives do we actually touch with grace and love for Jesus.

Moms and Dads, you’re the leaders in your home. You’re the parents of those children, and you are to serve them.

Bosses, it’s time to climb down off that pedestal you built for yourself and serve your employees.

Pastors, I know you need boundaries, but never become such high-britches that you’re unwilling to clean the toilets.

Lay ministers, always keep in mind, you have a message, a mandate from God, but sometimes you just need to wash feet to show His love.

Whatever role you live in, seek God first and forever. Allow Him to guide you to live as Jesus did – washing feet, washing windows, cleaning toilets, whatever. Always living out the love He has given you so they will know Him too.
