Why do you praise God? I think sometimes we get ur praise and our gratitude mixed up.

We praise God for WHO HE IS.
We thank God for WHAT HE HAS DONE.

Now, I’m not saying praising Him while thanking Him is wrong, but I do believe we need to learn who He is and praise Him for those attributes more than for what He has done.

David was in a real pickle. Saul had his men staking out David’s home with orders to capture David, likely to end in his death.

Of course, when he was able, David wrote a song about this experience, now known as Psalms 59. At first he begs God for protection. He asks that God would annihilate them. Then it’s like a switch is thrown and David makes the declaration:

But as for me, I will sing about your
power. Each morning I will sing with
joy about your unfailing love. For you
have been my refuge, a place of
safety when I am in distress.

So we see David is singing about (praising) God’s POWER and His UNFAILING LOVE. We see him make the declaration that God has been and is David’s refuge and place of safety when he is in distress.

Do you see that last line? “When I am in distress”?

David was in distress at the time, and he knew it wouldn’t be the last. We can take heed of that. We will face distress. We will. God is always our place of safety when we do.

Let’s start practicing what David did. Let’s praise God for who He is, for His attributes that are His alone. Let’s rehearse them and repeat them – because His love and power and grace and mercy never change. Just don’t get complacent and say the list as “blah, blah, blah.”

Every day, let’s sing with great joy about God’s unfailing love. Raise the roof with your praises!
