Choose God instead of Worry

It’s time we removed our worship from the things coming tomorrow and placed it on God don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today, Jesus said.
Let’s don’t confuse that with the light and airy “Don’t worry, be happy” of Bobby McFerrin. This is truly deep.

When Jesus said “don’t worry,” he removed our excuse that says, “that’s just how I am.” Yes, He did! If God Himself says that we can stop doing something, we can stop doing it. That doesn’t mean it will be easy or pleasant, just doable.

Mercy! The things I thought I could never do that when I set my mind to I could. You can, too.

Here’s the thing, though. We do have a problem just no longer thinking about something. Our brains don’t work that way. Try this. Think about the color green. Picture it. Look at all the shades of it. Examine it. Now, STOP thinking about it.

Did it work? Probably not. How about now thinking about the number 15. Look at the numbers, see the curves, remember where you’ve used it. What are you thinking about now and what are you no longer thinking about?

This is the renewing our minds that Paul wrote about in Romans 12:1-2. We have to replace the old thinking with new. Here in Matthew, Jesus was telling his followers (that includes you and me) to refuse to worry about tomorrow.

All those what-ifs? Change them. Change “What if I fail?” to “What if I succeed?” Change “What if I embarrass myself?” to “What if I shine?”

It’s not wrong to have the thoughts, y’all. It’s wrong to dwell on them.

When we worry about all that’s coming, we are saying that our God is not able to handle what we will face.

Are you really willing to say that? Over and over? Day in and day out? Frankly, that’s not much of relationship.

If we can’t trust God with our every day, our talk with the boss, our drive to another place, our success as a parent, our whatever, HOW can we trust Him with our eternity?

It’s time we removed our worship from the things coming tomorrow and placed it on God.

It’s time we choose to give our whole attention, every bit of it, to God, and refuse to get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. It’s time we trust God to keep His word to walk us through whatever comes our way.

Let’s start today. Whenever a what-if pops up, a concern for tomorrow, speak it aloud that you’ll deal with it with God tomorrow, not today. Remind yourself that you and God will deal with everything that comes up when it comes up. Walk in faith, Believer, you can do this!
