The Master You’re Serving

Whatever you do…as though you were working for the Lord….

Whatever. That includes the unpaid things, too. So, whether you’re in the workplace (even if it’s an office in your house) or at home, whatever you do, do it as though Jesus was your boss.

But Faye, you don’t understand! My boss is a real jerk! I can’t do anything to please him! She’s always on my case!

Do you see a caveat in the verse saying that you don’t have to work as though it was for the Lord if your boss is a jerk? I missed that part. Is it written in invisible ink?

Didn’t think so.

God is very clear. Whatever we do, driving, walking, talking, washing dishes, working at our jobs, vacuuming the house, planting flowers or crops, building, mowing the yard, cooking a meal, setting the table, cleaning the toilet, changing diapers, picking up laundry… W H A T E V E R must be done well, with the right heart, with the right mindset.

We see the people we serve, some are appreciative, others not so much. It’s easy to think that’s ultimately who we serve, but it’s not. When we work for a living, we serve either our boss or our clients. When we work at home, we serve ourselves and our families. When we work through a church or ministry, we serve others. Whatever we are doing, though, we are serving the Lord.

Here’s something to ask yourself: How should that change what I’m doing?

If we were cooking supper for God, would we be haphazard about it or would we be attentive and pour all we have into it?

If we were bookkeeping for Him, would we be more diligent in working those numbers or not really care?

If Jesus was our client, would we groan about every meeting and put in half-effort to accomplish what needed to be done?

We need to see our work as an offering to our Creator. We need to recognize Him as our ultimate boss or client. We need to let that concept determine our ethics and actions. Imagine if all who are called by His name did that?!? Let’s let it start with us.

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
