Humble May Not Mean What You Think

“Humble yourselves” the Word says, “under the mighty power of God…”

Many times in scripture, we’re told to be humble and to live in humility. I can’t remember all the times I’ve been taught that means that I’m to think less of myself than I do of others.

God does NOT say that here. He says to think less of myself than I do of HIM. I bow before God. I serve people from that position of knowing God and loving others as He loves me.

I’ve spent some time looking at the word “humble” in the Hebrew and the Greek this morning, because I’ve seen this trend that the Hebrew word means that the concept of humble means we’re to occupy the space designed for us, neither higher nor lower than others.

I’m no learned theologian. What I’m reading, though, shows me that this verse is translated pretty well—bow before God’s mighty power. Recognize that without God you’re without—without power, without life, without hope.

When Moses lived this humble way, he caught a lot of flack from the people of Israel, including his siblings. They called him on his attitude, sounding quite holy and righteous. Until God showed them the difference between the way Moses was and the way they were—in startling fashion.

We must come to the place where God’s opinion of us matters more than that of people. We must bow to Him alone, realizing that we are nothing before Him, and because of His love, mercy, and grace, we are special, yet without Him, we are nothing.

When it comes to people, we’re to remain humble, meaning we’re not thinking too highly of them or us. In fact, we’re not to be thinking too much of either. Our focus is to be on God to allow Him to direct us in how to respond to the people He brings us in contact with.

When we think too highly of ourselves, we are worshiping the wrong god. When we think too lowly of ourselves, we’re doing the same. Our focus is in the wrong place.

Let’s right that ship today. Let’s determine to bring our focus back to the Creator every time we start to be concerned with how we think of us or how others think of us. Let’s learn what God says about us and live in His opinion of us, letting that guide us rather than letting the mercurial opinion of people be our guide.
