This verse starts with “That is why…” which signals that there’s something before this we need to pay attention to. This verse is expounding on the “that” mentioned. So…. What’s the “that”?
Jesus had just told His followers that no one can serve two masters, that they would hate one and love the other, despise one and love the other. No in-between. He laid before them the choice to love God or be enslaved by money.
These words show an example of what this enslavement looks like. I love the the Amplified translation, “stop being perpetually uneasy, anxious and worried about your life.”
It’s hard to open the refrigerator or pantry and not see the foods there that we want. It’s hard to open the closets and not see the clothes we’d prefer—nothing looks like today’s styles, we’re two years (or more) behind! Then we get focused on those things, the not having what we want, the appearance of being less-than will just kill us!
So, we grab up our credit cards and hit the stores. We spend enough to fill our larders and closets to the brim with all the niceties, spending money we don’t have to get the things we say we need.
Then we’re chained to that credit card company, having to give them not only the money we borrowed from them but extra for the convenience of our instant gratification. Now we’re unable to give to the things of God because we’re slaves to the money we’ve chosen.
Jesus said that quality life is more than food and clothes. More than wants and desires.
This is not a simple choice. It’s super easy to fall into the money trap, unwittingly choosing it over God simply because we want something. That’s the lesson here: We must be aware at all times of consequences that come with our decisions.
Choose today whom you will serve: GOD or MONEY.
You’ll get to choose again tomorrow and the next day and the next, too. It’s time to stop being perpetually uneasy, anxious, and worried about your life. You trust God with the biggest need of salvation, it’s time to trust Him with the everyday, most mundane details of life.
