“You must be holy,” God told the people of Israel, “because I, the Lord, am holy.”
That’s a pretty tall order: being holy.
In this chapter of Leviticus, God was laying out His rules for what to eat, how to behave, and the punishment for choosing wrongly.
These words were added in, I believe, to show the people that these weren’t just a list of dos and don’ts. They were governances to provide security and help for the people. They were the way to be holy, and if they loved God, they would want to be like Him.
Did you notice as well, that He didn’t say this to the whole world? He said it to those He had chosen to be His. This little nation. This nation that wasn’t fierce in battle. This nation that was pushed around a lot. This nation that lived in fear. God said, YOU are who I choose to be MY people.
Isn’t that what He does for us today? We who are enslaved to our desires or to others. We who live in the darkness of depression and anxiety. We who clamor for help. We who feel useless, powerless, and unwanted. We who need help but don’t know where to find it.
We. Us. You and me.
God says, I have set YOU apart for something more, something bigger, something you need. And that something is HIM.
Ooh, y’all! God has set you apart for HIM. To be HIS. To live with and for HIM. YOU. Not because of your powerlessness, your weakness, your desires, your enslavement. No. Because He WANTS YOU. The Creator WANTS YOU!
Bask in that, dear one. Sit right there and feel that concept wash over you. Read it again: God wants you.
And so, we choose to be holy because He is holy. We choose to live like Him because we want to please Him.
Now, this is only possible through our salvation relationship with Jesus – this being able to be holy, but it IS possible!
No matter where you’ve been, no matter what you’ve done. God wants you and has provided a way for you to be holy like Him!
Today is the day to choose Him. To decide that you’re accepting this gift of His choice of you to be His, to live with and for Him. Today is the day to start living like you believe this truth. Are you ready?
