What’s in a name?

Names are important. They are how we identify one another. Many name their children strong, powerful names as predictors for their personalities and lives. Some name their children names found in scripture, hoping they will become like their namesake.

Names are important to God, too. He is known by many names that describe His attributes: El-Roi (the God who sees me), Abba (Daddy), Jehovah-Rapha (the God who heals), El-Shaddai (The Almighty God), and more. Yet the name He told Moses to share with the People was YHWH, (I am that I am).

Jesus’ name came from Heaven, given by God Himself through an angel. He would be known as Immanuel (God with us), named Jesus, which means, “YHWH saves.” His very name is salvation!

We have to understand, our Savior was not the only person at that time with the five-letter name. It was pretty popular. However, He was and is that particular Jesus of Nazareth, born of the virgin in Bethlehem. He is the one in whom we find salvation – rescue – from the natural consequence of our choice to serve self instead of God. That choice for me, me, me leads to eternal death. God chose to come to rescue all us me-first souls through the person of Jesus.

He did it one time, and only in that Person. We can seek salvation in many places, look for rescue in many gods, but we will not find that eternal rescue in any other than Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified and risen Savior. There is no other path to God than Jesus.

Have you sought rescue and peace from other than Jesus? Today is the day to choose Him over all others.

Are you ready?
