Have you eaten today?

What does this “bread of life” thing mean, really? It’s not like Jesus is my everyday sustenance, is He?

Not in the way you think of eating a meal, no.

Jesus is, however, the spiritual sustenance you need to get through every single day and each moment of that day.

When we consider the daily bread of Jesus’ time, we think of the fresh-baked loaves coming out of ovens, hot and fragrant. We see the loaves that are just perfect. Our hunger for that wonderful treat rises with each breath of that aroma. That bread gives strength and health. It speaks hospitality. It offers comfort.

This is Jesus, y’all. We see Him in all His perfection when we look for Him. The more that we consume of His teachings, the more we want. Our hunger to be near Him grows with each encounter. He gives us strength and health within us — even if our physical self is ailing, our spiritual and emotional self is soaring. He is the Way to Almighty God. His arms are open to us, hospitality at its utmost. He offers all comfort, all joy, all peace.

When we “consume” Jesus, we receive a filling, a nutrition, we can’t get from anything else. We do that by slowing down long enough each day for a “meal,” just like our physical meals. We open the Bible and we learn of Him and from Him. Even the Old Testament. Remember John 1:1? In the beginning was the Word (that’s Jesus) and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Jesus is all over the Old Testament.

If you wish you never had to worry about your spiritual or emotional hunger again, turn to Jesus. He is the daily sustenance that will carry you throughout your life with quenched hunger and thirst, soul and spirit strong and healthy.

Today is a great day to get started.

Coffee, Bible, Journal.
